In every season I spend a lot of time watching the birds, squirrels and chipmunks who come to enjoy my feeders.  Their visits entertain me and inspire many posts and poems. Recently I spent some time watching a grey squirrel feed and preen in the garden.

One winter morning
Spotlighted in a golden patch of sun,
the large grey squirrel
pauses beneath the dangling feeders.
It twitches its silver fluffy tail,
nibbles delicately on a few striped seeds
then scampers away
to gather rose hips
from the tatters
of summer’s blossoms.

Lovely! I should pay more attention to the squirrels and birds! I love your description of the squirrel pausing and then scampering away. How long until we get to enjoy our summer blossoms???

Thank you for a wonderful little poem! As coincidence would have it, I wrote about squirrels today too.

  5. This is lovely, Molly! The squirrels have figured out how to leap from a tree to one of our feeders. It spins like mad once they land. I can’t imagine that it doesn’t make them dizzy!
